Guest Blog | For Goodness Cake:  Wedding Cake Trends 2017

Family, friends and photographers alike look forward to the moment when the happy couple joins hands around the cake knife and cut the first slice of cake.

Not only will your guests finally get to taste the gorgeous creation they've been eyeing throughout your reception, it's a classic wedding moment up there with the first kiss and first dance.

Couples usually choose their cake to complement their chosen theme and style of wedding, but that doesn’t mean you need to be restricted to a ribbon trim to introduce your colour scheme!  There are so many new and innovative techniques in cake decorating that can really make your cake a show stopper for all your guests to admire and talk about.

Here are some of my key trends in cake for 2017.

Marbling
This is a fantastic way to complement your colour scheme. A really modern choice especially when topped with some magnificent large flowers.

Metallics
So many ways to give your cake an on-trend metallic twist – from a sparkling sequinned tier to a more subtle lustre shade. Or if you are really daring (and don’t mind the expense!), go all out with an edible gold or silver leaf tier! This cake combines a few of these with a touch of edible gold flakes on the top tier.

Floral arrangements
Traditionally wedding cakes had sugar flowers, usually roses on them. Nowadays, we have such a wide choice in floral, couples can choose for their bouquets and buttonholes and cake to match. Many cake makers often follow the florists lead in matching these up with delicate sugar flower decoration.

Colour Pop
We so often think of wedding colour schemes as being traditionally pastel, but couples have become more daring with colour, not only introducing deeper, bolder colours, but of mixing them up a bit too. Think of rich, jewel colours, deep navy’s and in this lovely combo, red, orange and yellow!

Ruffles and textures
Even if colour isn’t your thing, or you want to keep your cake a more traditional white or ivory, there are so many lovely techniques that can draw the eye and give your cake that wow factor. Ruffles were a top trend for 2016 and show no signs of fading in 2017. Pleating, beading and lace, all edible, can look fabulous. Think of drawing inspiration from your wedding dress!

So, now that your head is swimming with ideas for your cake, the fun can begin. Surely, the best bit is in the eating!
